Mahi māra - gardening
We are lucky at HeadStart to have a healthy garden with lots of edible plants and fruit growing! Our garden is a great learning resources for tamariki to learn about where food comes from and the steps we need to take to grow our own kai. Children help water the garden, clear away weeds, prune back plants and learn about desirable growing conditions.
Gardening takes a lot of patience, especially when we see a yummy strawberry growing! It is hard to resist the temptation to pick these straight away, but we have been waiting patiently for the fruit to ripen, then identifying a good time to harvest. Our lemons and mandarins are looking good, we can’t wait to enjoy these in a few months time. For now, we can enjoy the strawberries, herbs and peaches.

Curiosity
The children have been finding lots of spider webs and insects like a praying mantis, worms and ants. Lucy got out our resin insects with the coloured Perspex blocks for the children to build a variety of homes for the insects. The children were fascinated and wanted to know each of the insects names. They included ant, termite, grasshopper, common bluebottle butterfly, black shield wasp, Spotted red bug and golden scorpion to name some of them. They asked for these names over and over showing their interest, curiosity about the world around them.
Te Whariki states that “children are critical thinkers, problem solvers and explorers” who learn through “active exploration of the environment”. (MOE, 2017, p. 46).

Discovery
Children are constantly learning about the world around them in so many varied ways. It could be from the way they see the world through different glasses or masks. It could be discovering how sand changes when water Is added or when sand is added to water. The thickness changes and bubbles may appear from the sand. It is a wonderful sensory experience. Our children love learning through our environment and the cicada’s are starting to sing. We also enjoy seeing the airforce planes flying low overhead – this encourages all sorts of construction design. Our children build with lots of varied construction materials, train tracks, Dulplo, mobilo and even working out how the trucks can carry cars. Exploration and discovery and being curious about the world around us keeps children learning and being a positive person in our community.

Challenge
Children enjoy challenging their own abilities and gaining skills in a wide range of physical ways. It could be climbing and sliding like in these photos, it could be spatial awareness like how can I fit my body through a gap and learning how to wriggle through something. The teachers support children to challenge themselves as it builds children’s self esteem and confidence in their abilities and encourages them to ready to try new activities. Children need confidence to try and then try again till they can achieve. Problem solving and learning from others and asking for help are skills we encourage HeadStart children to aspire to.
